about

The Blues Brothters return with their 14th(!) album. Recorded amidst a recent stretch of secret-shows across the midwestern United States, the Brothters made a pilgrimage to the world famous Cincinatti Zoo, to pay their respects (Sonically) to the beloved Harambe, who was mercilessly destroyed in the summer of 2016. The Brothters surprised even themselves with the power of their live show. Here's what the critics are saying:

"Yuri’s droning Telecaster clang opens “(I'm A) Soul Men” like swordplay, and Sam sings the chorus at the top of his range with astounding strength. Former President Donald J. Trump pushes the beat in “Born on the Wild Side Part II” with pinpoint impatience; chef Gordon Ramsay's precision bass screams turn up the barn-dance delirium in “Cambodian Getaway.” And “We Are the Blues Brothers,” a fresh slice of punk rock melodrama, driven to tears here by Mixmaster Mike’s deftly selected samples, proves that the Blues Brothters, under the lights and during this horrible plague, can still improve on even their best studio work." - David Fricke, Rolling Stone

"The Blues Brothters are masters of pacing, and roll out a skinful of blistering punk rock covers to keep the show rolling, including "One Last Caress", "Cambodian Getaway" and "Louis Louis". The audience doesn't miss a beat, of course, and the only thing more powerful than Mixmaster Mike's almost over-zealous turntable scratching are their shrieks. And then things get REALLY REALLY good: "Hellooo!" "Bitch!" "Jackass!" "Hey now!" "For Harambe!" They even get the band excited when name checking Cincinatti. "Who Gives a Shit" is full of complex polyrhythms and demands total precision from the musicians, but you can hardly blame them for getting swept up in this show.

Compare Animal Plan3t: Live At The Cincinnati Zoo to Blues Brothers’ last official live release, 2018’s Live in Israel, and it’s apparent how significantly the band have grown in that time. After starting the decade in pursuit of a “more poppy” sound, they ended it by taking a chance on returning to the 'House of Blues' formula for the third time. Now a new horizon has unfolded neatly in front of them and from here, they’re free to pursue any direction they wish. 9.8" - Sam Sodonsky, Pitchfork

A sublime listening experience. Once again The Blues Brothters make a serious case for the ongoing necessity of rock & roll. Absolutely vital. ★★★★★ - Mojo Magazine
